From the moment Honda’s plans to bring back the Africa Twin were revealed, and rumours about its serious adventure focus began to circulate, expectations for Honda’s new flagship adventure bike were high. And it doesn’t disappoint.

First impressions are of comfort, lightness and refinement. The seat is spacious as is the relation

to the footpegs, meaning that there is plenty of room for 6ft plus riders. Yet the bike itself has an impressively low seat height so that even the vertically challenged will be at ease. This was part of Honda’s design brief to make the bike as manageable as possible and has been achieved through integrating the oil tank and pump within the bottom of the crank case, which in turn reduces the overall height of the engine and resulting seat height. The seat itself is also particularly narrow where it meets the fuel tank, which means as a rider your legs aren’t splayed wide like they are on a BMW GS, which is significant for shorter riders. But move back on the seat and it gets wider, which is key to the high levels of rider comfort on the move. The handlebar position feels neutral yet purposeful and immediately gives great leverage, control and inspires confidence.

The engine offers smooth, linear power, the impeccable fuelling and throttle connection making for assured rapid progress, but the 94bhp motor fails to truly inspire. It has a decent torque figure of 68.6ftlb, and through the confidence-inspiring throttle-torear tyre connection it means that it’s easy to access every bit of that power.

Despite significant 230mm suspension travel from the beautiful 45mm Showa USD fork, and 220mm travel from the rear to cope with offroad riding, the bike still feels solid and planted on the road.

The Africa Twin inspires confidence on the dirt, regardless of your ability or off-road experience. Its physical size makes it a breath of fresh air in the current 1200cc-plus dominated adventure bike class; the parallel-twin motor making it both low and narrow.

In a class dominated by bike manufacturers obsessed with producing ever larger-capacity bikes, the Africa Twin is a revelation. It’s a true adventure bike, with all the ingredients to take you wherever you want to go.

On road or off it, it’s effortless good fun Just look at that monthly figure! £99 per month is so affordable that it’s tempting to get one just for the bargain. Go anywhere, do anything, and all at a great price. HOT PICK
