TEAMS HEAD FOR A ROW OVER RULES
WSB organisers want to see closer racing but team bosses can’t agree on what changes should be made
Despite having the most accessible and affordable set of technical rules in its 30-year history the World Superbike paddock has become increasingly vocal and rebellious at the domination of the two main factory efforts of Kawasaki and Ducati.
So far in 2017 the two manufacturers have won every one of the 14 races to date and such is their current superiority that their four factory riders have locked out the podium in 12 of those 14 races.
One significant rule change currently being discussed is that WSB follow in the footsteps of both BSB and Motogp and introduce a controlled ECU in 2018.
Although it has been confirmed that this option is on the table, the details of what this will actually entail are far from being finalised.
MCN spoke to all the main players for their opinions on the expected new rules and how it would work in WSB.
Daniel Carrera, WSB Director, said: “The ECU is difficult to confirm. It is probable but there are many handicaps and many things that have to be evaluated. If we have enough time to implement it, the teams have enough time to test it. It is also not only the ECU. We are reconsidering all the technical rules. A single ECU is a possibility.
“We are not happy with the gap between Kawasaki/ducati and the rest. So we would like to have a better competition where more people can be in the top positions. What we see is that we have a line, which is the Ducati and Kawasaki. We expected that this year the gap would be reduced. We saw that they are not reducing the gap - they are still increasing the gap. So do we need to maintain the level? Will the people behind be able to reach that level? And when they do, will the top ones have reached another level?
“What we are considering is how to make it possible that these other people can reach it; can get closer.”
