Portsmouth route

Spice up a ride south

If you have a trip to the continent planned this year via the port of Portsmouth you’ll more than likely find yourself on the M3.

While motorway and dual carriageways make for quick progress they can be tedious. To liven up the journey try this little cut through from the M3 at Basingstoke to the A3 just north of Petersfield.

At junction 6 take the A339 signed towards Basingstoke and follow the ring round towards Alton, you’ll pass under the M3 and it will soon become a distant memory as the tree-lined country lanes welcome you. With undulations and sweeping bends it’s rather difficult to overtake but the scenery is pretty and the change of pace from motorway riding a pleasure.

You skirt round Alton and there’s a tricky double roundabout and railway bridge to contend with. Again the road opens up as you head to the pretty village of Selborne, where the road narrows and speed limit drops to 20mph. Once out of the village enjoy the final five miles before you join the A3 and return to the mundane!
