What rubber Q will take me to the V-max?

Motorcycle News (UK) - - Garage -

I enjoyed MCN’S recent tyre supplement, however there was no mention of the tyre sizes for a Yamaha V-max. I know they are an unusual size, but for a bike that could shred a back tyre in one day, tyres are a significant outlay. A lot of the tyres I saw in the sports touring section had an 18in rim but were only 160mm wide. I was quite keen to try a Metzeler Roadtec 01 or possibly Conti Roadattack 3. Are tyre manufacturers going to broaden their sizes for those of us with quirky bikes? Keith Carmichael, Northumberland

A Answered by Bryn Phillips, Cambrian Tyres The original equipment Bridgestone BT-028, as well as the Dunlop Roadsmart II and Metzeler ME880 Marathon are available for your bike, and what you have to bear in mind is that Yamaha chose to equip your bike with an unusual size combination – the only bike in the world that uses this combo – and that the V-max has relatively low production numbers.

Tyre manufacturers will only gear up for production when they either have an original equipment contract, as Bridgestone does on your bike, or when they think they can make money from owners wishing to try something else.
