M5, A358, A39, A399, A361, A396
Distance 114 miles Why you should ride it Starting at Taunton, which is just off the M5, this route gives you a great taster of Somerset’s wilder areas. Picking up the A358 towards Minehead you can stop for a quick ice cream on the seaside before joining the A39 and taking on one of the UK’S steepest hills at Porlock. This lovely coastal road takes you towards Barnstaple, but if you turn off at Blackmoor Gate and take the A399 to South Molton and then the A361 to Tiverton before looping back to Minehead on the A396 up the Exe Valley it’s much more fun. Fancy a detour? For a true Exmoor experience, cut through the park on one of the B-roads – just watch out for wild Exmoor ponies in the road.
