‘I’d love to go for a ride with Mike Tyson. He has genuine attitude’
Leon Camier, factory MV Agusta World Superbike star, spills the beans
Q1 What are you riding?
I’m just waiting for a Yamaha XVS1100 Dragstar to turn up for the road but I’ve got lots of dirt bikes – a Husqvarna 450 supermoto, a KTM enduro, a 250cc Yamaha motocross bike, a trials bike...
Q2 Which living motorcyclist do you most admire?
Valentino Rossi is the obvious one. For all his achievements and the motivation to keep racing. But then there’s Casey Stoner for his out-and-out speed too.
Q3 What’s your worst habit?
Everything I do, according to my girlfriend! Even my breathing annoys her! Which is fair enough because I imagine I am a pain in the arse to live with.
Q4 If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
The ability to take Tom Sykes’ tonsils out! [Sykes was playing pool, very loudly, in the background – ed.]
Q5 What’s the fastest you’ve ever gone on a bike?
I don’t know for sure but it was probably on my Aprilia RSV4 World Superbike on the main straight at Monza. That would have been about 206mph.
Q6 When were you last scared?
I had a big moment at Turn 1 at Phillip Island this year. I had an oil leak and it was all over my tyre. I was approaching the corner at over 200mph and when I hit the brakes to turn in, the rear just came round. My whole life flashed before my eyes at that point. It was soooo fast. Because there was so much oil on the tyre it didn’t come back, grip, and highside me; it just sort of came back gently and I somehow stayed on it.
Q7 How many miles have you done in the last year?
Not many on the road but I’ll have ridden thousands of miles on dirt bikes.
Q8 What’s the highest mileage you’ve covered in one day?
I’ve done Extreme Enduros and that’s six or seven hours a day riding.
Q9 What irritates you most?
You want to go fast but you just feel that, at any point, something’s gonna happen that’s not your fault. That takes the fun out of it for me on the road.
Q10 You’ve got two weeks off – where are you going?
I’m thinking of a plan for my next birthday, which will involve taking my motorhome to the north of Spain or the north of Portugal with some mates, flying back to get our enduro bikes, and then riding all the way from Andorra – where I live – across the north of Spain and back to the motorhome to do some surfing.
Q11 Got one pearl of wisdom for new riders?
Keep your eyes open!
Q12 Ever fallen off somewhere embarrassing?
The scariest part of doing Extreme Enduros is when you have to ride slowly round the arena in front of everyone at the end. I’m not very good at trials riding so a stupid little stone or something like that is enough to make me fall off and look like a dick. I’ve done it many times!
Q13 Do you have one indispensable item of kit?
I’ve worn the same Spidi back protector for years.
Q14 Which four people would you invite on a Sunday blast?
Mike Tyson because I read his book and his character is so not normal. He’s got a genuine don’t-give-a-f*** attitude. Apart from him, I’d invite my mates because they’re the guys I have the most fun with. So that’s Chaz Davies (WSB star), Jonny Walker (pro Enduro rider) and Taddy Blazusiak (former trials and enduro champion).
Q15 Do you have a tool you couldn’t live without?
My Swiss Army knife. My dad started me on that when I was little so I’ve had it about 20 years. It’s always in my bag.
Q16 Do you adjust your bike’s suspension?
Q17 If you could have one of your bikes back, which would it be?
I’m kind of trying to get all of my old race bikes back that I won on. I know who’s got my 2001 125 but he wants silly money. Then there’s my 2005 Honda CBR600 Supersport bike, which I need to speak to Padgetts about, and my 2009 Yamaha R1 BSB bike, which is up for sale at the moment.
Q18 What would you never buy?
I don’t really see the point in big situp-and-beg touring bikes. I want to go fast, not just ride around for thousands of miles.
Q19 Which road (or track) would you build on your desert island?
Mugello, with bits of Imola built in. Mugello is just on another level – big, spectacular, fast and flowing.
Q20 If you ruled the world, what new law would you pass?
I could shoot my rivals with immunity! No, I’m joking, don’t print that.
‘My whole life flashed before my eyes. It was soooo fast’
It’s not easy but Camier is seriously rapid on the MV Agusta He’s a former BSB champ and now he wrestles the MV Agusta in WSB Camier’s early days riding for Honda in BSB
