Title-winning crew chief back on board
One change Brookes has made with the Anvil Hire TAG Yamaha team in recent rounds is bringing in former Milwaukee Yamaha crew chief Stewart Winton.
Winton joined the team full-time from Knockhill, enabling Brookes to focus more on his riding rather than what needs to be done with the bike to find the feeling they enjoyed in 2015.
Winton played a key role in Brookes’ 2015 title success and has told MCN he believes there’s ‘no reason’ they can’t get back to that point this year.
“We know what Josh is capable of and we know what we had in 2015 so it should be a case of seeing where we can improve the package to get there,” he said.
“There are a few things different, we’ve got K-tech suspension not Öhlins and then there are other things like factory support, but there’s a factory Yamaha team in the paddock so people can judge for themselves whether that support is advantageous or not.
“It’s possible to get to the stage we were in in 2015, the team have enough motivation and we know what makes a bike work. The biggest thing working against us now is time, we are now racing every other weekend so testing is difficult and you have to develop the bike during a race weekend where you can’t take big risks.”
