Lorenzo and Petrucci slip down the field
While Andrea Dovizioso might have been able to take positives from his performance, Jorge Lorenzo and Danilo Petrucci suffered a much more difficult weekend with tyre issues.
Lorenzo came home in 11th despite showing strong pace at the start of the race. He said: “I managed to do four or five laps at a good pace in the early stages and I was racing at a good pace until the performance dropped off on the left side of the rear tyre. In the final stages, however, I had to reduce my pace because the bike was spinning under acceleration.
“At Assen and here there were two or three corners where I was losing too much time to the leading group. I hope that we will not have the same problems at the next tracks.”
Petrucci suffered similar issues on the satellite-run factory bike despite also showing early promise as he got involved with the battle for fourth, and was left to come home one place behind Lorenzo in 12th, despite managing to spend a few laps longer than the Spaniard running at the front.
“I felt vibrations on the left side from the warm-up lap and thought that I just had to warm the tyre up, but the more laps I did on it the worse the vibrations got until it was very difficult. After seven or eight laps, I started to be afraid I’d crash. It felt like I was towing a trailer, because of the way the rear was sliding around. On the data we saw strange sliding and spinning and we don’t know why. It’s a shame, because starting from the front row a top five finish was possible.”
