Give it some Welly

A brilliant biker haunt

Motorcycle News (UK) - - News - By Justin Hayzelden

To the north of the Trossachs, at the southern edge of Rannoch Moor, lies the small Scottish village of Tyndrum, a remote hamlet whose location at the junction of the A82 and A85 puts it firmly on the map as the gateway to some of the finest motorcycle rides on the planet - be it west to Argyll and the Islands or north through Glencoe to the entire Highland coastline, there are spectacular roads in simply every direction.

At the height of the season literally thousands of bikes pass through this point and almost all of them will take a break at Tyndrum’s world famous landmark, the Green Welly Stop. Established in 1965 by Leslie Gosden and his wife Betty, this once humble filling station known as ‘Gosden’s of Tyndrum’ has grown into a thriving staging post that’s ready to refresh even the weariest of travellers.

Today it’s still a family-run business, with Les’ granddaughter Fiona Robertson and her husband Edward now at the helm; both are avid motorcyclists and know how important it is to offer facilities that cater for their fellow bikers, not to mention a warm Scottish welcome.

Besides fuel and associated sales there’s a take away café, self-service restaurant, gift shop, an outdoor clothing store – handy if you’ve forgotten to pack your thermals – and a hardstanding for up to 50 bikes. All food is prepared on the premises, including the best-selling Cullen Skink soup, one of five varieties always available.

Spend any time here at all and you’ll meet a huge variety of riders, from IAM groups on a local rideout to international mile munchers on a grand tour – when it comes to bikers, the Green Welly is a true cosmopolitan crossroads. And although not a traditional hang out, the Green Welly is becoming something of a destination; throughout the summer there will be a series of dealer demo days, with representatives from Ducati, Yamaha, BMW and Suzuki displaying their latest models - there can’t be many surroundings more idyllic in which to take a test ride!
