Sheils on flying form at Walderstown
Derek Sheils maintained his 100% success record in Irish National feature races in 2017 by winning the Grand Final at Walderstown in Co Westmeath on Sunday. The 33-year-old has already taken victories at Tandragee, Cookstown and Skerries this season and added a fourth win on the Burrows Suzuki on Sunday.
“I wanted this one and led from start to finish,” Sheils smiled.
The Suzuki rider dominated the race, securing victory by 5.7 seconds from local favourite Derek Mcgee (Kawasaki) who finished just ahead of William Dunlop on the Temple Golf Club Yamaha.
Earlier in the day Sheils had lost out to Mcgee in the opening superbike encounter as the Mullingar man delighted his home crowd by taking victory by less than a second from William Dunlop, with Michael Sweeney (MJR BMW) third.
Adam Mclean, TT 2017’s fastest newcomer, continued to impress by taking victory in the Supersport race on his MSS Kawasaki. He repeated his Cookstown feat by seeing off more experienced 600cc specialist William Dunlop (Caffrey/ic Yamaha). Third went to another rising star, Paul Jordan, who had an ex-taylor Mackenzie R6 for the event.
It’s been hard to get the better of Shiels this season
