Yamaha’s new X-MAX 400

New scoot is a comfortable commuter and a blast at weekends

The executive scooter market is a competitive place, as consumers want a bike capable of commuting and fun weekend rides. Yamaha say their new X-MAX 400 is the answer.

Yamaha had made the X-MAX feel like a car, so the fit and finish have to be of that quality, while even the dash looks like it’s been pinched from a four-wheeler. It’s got keyless ignition that allows you to unlock the bike and seat, as well as start the engine, without removing the key from your pocket. It’s more compact than the old model and has shed 5kg, but still retains the same level of storage, including underseat space for two helmets.

The 33bhp 400cc engine has remained largely unchanged, apart from a few Euro4 updates. If you do get a little carried away, there’s traction control and ABS as standard. There are small handling changes too, thanks to a new fork. Expect to pay around £6000.
