Coward’s fel­low York­shire­man, James Cowton en­joyed an im­pres­sive 2017 South­ern 100. A new lap record in the 650cc class was backed up by top plac­ings in the 600cc races that saw him mix­ing it with, and beat­ing, the likes of Dean Har­ri­son and Michael Dunlop. The 25-year- old has joined the ex­pe­ri­enced North­ern Ire­land based Mca­doo Kawasaki team for 2017.

He said: “This is my sev­enth sea­son of rac­ing and get­ting into a bet­ter team with bet­ter bikes makes so much dif­fer­ence.”

Cowton has served his roads ap­pren­tice­ship at Oliver’s Mount and on the roads of the small Ir­ish meet­ings. He is al­ready a reg­u­lar TT com­peti­tor and fin­ished on the podium in the 2014 Light­weight race.

The Mca­doo fam­ily en­joy a huge road rac­ing his­tory, hav­ing backed rid­ers like Joey Dunlop, Alan Ir­win, Paul Cranston, Ryan Far­quhar, Ian Hutchin­son, Conor Cum­mins and Michael Dunlop over the past 30 years.

Cowton added: “This year I will have as good a stocker as Dean Har­ri­son and we proved with the twin to­day that we have a sim­i­lar speed to Ivan Lintin’s bike in that class. Any­thing is pos­si­ble now.”
