PILE ON STYLE AT TOP EVENTS 2
There are still loads of great retro-related shindigs this year. These are our favourites...
Dress like a total plum! Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride September 24
Why? Because there is nothing else in the world that lets you dress up like a fool, while raising money for prostate cancer and suicide prevention. The DGR has turned from a small idea into an event that attracts 100,000 riders globally and last year raised £6million. There are rides all over the country and all over the world. Take a cravat, a suit, a waistcoat or some brogues. You can even combine the look with some funny face fur. We’re going for a Guy Martin-meets-Emmerdale Farm sideburn combo. Ride anything you want – you get people on race-reps, but a retro naked may well be the way forward. Buy an open-face helmet for the fullon wind-in-your-beard experience. Costs nothing – but you need to raise some money for the causes. Contact www.gentlemansride.com
Start that project! Classic Bike Live October 28-29
Why? It’s one of the classic events of the year, with a good chunk of custom and retro bikes too. There are great old racers, superb displays and lots of eye and ear candy, but best of all for tinkerers is the autojumble and the trade stands. There’s huge potential here to find the bits to start your next project, pick up that coveted piece of retro kit or even a whole bike. Take a car, or even a van. That way you can take your ‘bargains’ home. Buy a random frame that no-one can work out what it’s from, a Barry Sheene poster and a 1978 Bell helmet. They will all be there, we promise. Ride anything pre-1990 if possible Costs £9 for an adult, pre-booked Contact www.classicbikelive.co.uk
Live it big for a weekend! Glemsec 101 September 1-3
Why? A weekend of drag racing, amazing scenery, music and girls in polkadot dresses. The Glemsec unashamedly ticks every retro cliché but does it with class. Situated on the Germany/france border, the event involves a custom show, live music and a two-by-two sprint race. Take the other half, a tent, some earplugs and some Ibuprofen. The party never really stops at Glemsec! Buy anything from a custom bike to another patch for your demin waistcoat. Ride a customised BMW boxer twin. Long, low and really loud please. Cost Weekend camping is €20 and budget for about £500 for ferries, fuel food, drinking and all the other stuff. Contact www.glemseck101.de
Cut through the UK! Malle Great Mile Aug 31 – Sept 3
Why? Because it’s a brilliant test of motorcycle fortitude and a gentleman’s stiff upper-lip. A 72-hour, 1000-mile motorcycle rally that cuts through the UK, from the northern tip of Scotland to the southern end of Cornwall on motorcycles wholly inappropriate for the task.
There’s big road miles through amazing scenery, wild camping, a daily trials section, a beach race and a competitive hillclimb. It’s super-stylish too – Malle are a London-based, highend luggage brand/fashion label and everything will be slick and ultra-cool. Take as much or as little as you want – some riders choose to be in multi-bike teams, others will go it alone with just a wing, a prayer and a really big spanner for company. Buy some waterproof riding jeans. You’ll live in them for the four days Costs from £460, which includes event entry, support, four nights of camping and food. Contact www.mallelondon.com
Get shale in your pint! DTRA Eastbourne September 3
Why? We’ve already recommended flat-track racing as a great sport to compete in, but it’s also a great event to spectate at too. Spend some time looking at the bikes – they’re all works of art in their own ways and while some of the field is taken up by modern 450s, there’s loads of old, heavy metal doing battle too. Take a sceptical friend. They’ll be converted to retro racing. Buy a warm hot-dog and equally warm pint of lager. It’s a world away from Silverstone’s Wing. Ride anything you like it, but a street scrambler is the bike of choice – and something you could race... one day. Costs nothing to get in. Contact www.dirttrackriders.co.uk
A brilliant mix of eccentric bikes and even more eccentric bikers come out to play
Of course you need that special tool for a bike you don't own... yet.
Glamsec is a booze-fuelled party weekend for bikers
