Q How can I stop my VFR’S starting issues?

Motorcycle News (UK) - - Garage -

I have a much-loved Honda VFR750FL, but every so often it won’t start. There’s just a clicking sound. When I fitted a new solenoid switch it was fine for five weeks, but now the fault is back. I’ve also tried a new reg/rec and starter motor without any joy either. Trevor Bone, email

A Answered by Shaun Lock, Bridge Motorcycles I assume the battery is in good order and if the solenoid is clicking that usually means the button is OK, and getting some power. An old-school check is to bypass the solenoid by bridging across from the battery positive to the starter motor. If it turns over, the solenoid is at fault, but yours is new. However, the rest of the bike is 27 years old and I wonder whether the chunky cable from the solenoid switch to starter motor has got some corrosion and when you moved it around to fit the new switch that allowed more power through for a few weeks. Bridge it and see what happens.
