THIS WEEK IN... 1973
Ago wins the title, a packet of fags was 20p and crash helmets were only just legalé
1973 marked a time of change for all of us – it was the year that we entered the EU, a time of the three-day week, power cuts, a miners strike and galloping inflation making everyone feel poorer than they did the year before.
And it was to get worse, too – by the end of the year we were staring an oil crisis in the face after the major producing countries decided to up the price and reduce the supply of black gold. Still, at least it got people on to bikes…
Perhaps the saddest event for MCN readers was the Summerland fire of August 2 on the Isle of Man. A regular haunt for Tt-goers, the leisure centre/nightclub caught fire after a carelessly-tossed cigarette caught a kiosk on fire. Over 50 people were killed in the blaze.
