Plans to scrap engines leave many fuming

Motorcycle News (UK) - - This Week -

It does not seem that long ago that I wondered into a small newsagents and bought a ticket for the first ever National Lottery, dreaming of a multimillion pound spending spree.

Actually, it was a while ago – 23 years ago (1994). A lot can happen in 23 years! Like the complete phasing out of the internal combustion engine – if the Government’s recent announcement is to be believed! By 2040 all diesel and petrol engines are to be banned, so says the Government in its latest environmental plan.

The Government has been bullied into making this shock announcement after campaign group Clientearth took legal action and a judge ruled that more needed to be done sooner to improve air quality.

No mention of motorcycles yet, but you can be sure they’ll be included (sooner or later). Let’s hope this bold plan leads to electric bikes that are more affordable, lighter and can manage decent mileage before needing a recharge. Maybe we can look forward to a better public transport system, no new taxes to fill the massive hole left by the scrapping of fuel tax (no fuel = no tax?!). Or maybe, just maybe the Government will finally realise that motorcycles are the answer! ANDY CALTON
