Fred­die Spencer was watch­ing his ca­reer spi­ral away from him, with poor form through in­juries. It reached its nadir in Au­gust 1989, when he was fired by Gi­a­como Agos­tini’s Marl­boro Yamaha team af­ter a se­ries of falls, missed races and mi­nor plac­ings. He was re­placed by 250 rider Luca Cadalora. He looked wrong on a Yamaha, any­way.
