Piling on the miles
I applaud your #ride5000miles feature. Get out there and ride your bike, whatever the weather is doing. There is no bad day to ride a bike – just some days are better than others. It’s a pity the motorcycle trade in general don’t see the benefit of people doing big miles on their bike, though. Come trade-in time, they look at the mileage – in my case 11,000 miles in three years – and declare: “Well, it’s on the high side.” Excuse me, but it is a big adventure bike and I have had some big adventures on it, to the Alps and Pyrenees.
I appreciate that you always believe your bike is worth more than is offered, but remarks about mileage may put you off riding it. Is a large motorcycle engine any less reliable than a car of the same capacity? An 11,000-mile, three-year-old car would be considered a good, low-mileage trade-in. Bill P, email
