Stop off for gateaux… BLACK FOREST

Motorcycle News (UK) - - Riding -

The Black Forest is home to Germany’s most beautiful road – the B500. The national highway carves its way down the middle of the forest and wriggles up and over mountain passes with gorgeous scenery and roller-coaster turns making it a biker’s dream.

The actual road itself is only 40 miles long and stretches from BadenBaden to Freudenstadt. And yes, it is a fair old way for a 40-mile stint… but it’s so worth it.

Make your base in Baden-baden and spend the next few days riding the B500. As soon as you’ve ridden the ribbon, just turn around and have another go, as the road runs back down the mountain the sun warms the back of your neck, sweet-talking you into another go, over and over again. Whether you start north or south, the road etches high up the spine of an addictive green mountain that incites you to ride and ride. You can probably get about four good laps in a single day, practising and perfecting your lines.

Once you’ve had enough for the day, head back to your pension, which will no doubt be packed with likeminded B500 converts and compare notes on the plethora of corners and head back out again tomorrow. The northern section along the Schwarzwaldhochstraße is the most exhilarating with views over the Rhine. But the whole ribbon is flawless, thanks to a blend of hairpins, lefts, rights and sweepers. A two year-old with a crayon couldn’t have drawn more twists, curls and whirls.
