SURTEES BIKES AT CLAS­SIC BIKE LIVE

Clas­sic Bike Live will soon open its doors at The East of Eng­land Arena over the week­end of Oc­to­ber 28-29. The lat­est ad­di­tion to the at­trac­tions is a spe­cial dis­play hon­our­ing the late, great John Surtees.

The Surtees Foun­da­tion are bring­ing six ma­chines from Surtees’ collection to the event. There’s a 1933 Jap-en­gined Ex­cel­sior B14, an ex­am­ple of the model on which the young Surtees en­joyed his solo rac­ing de­but in a grass track meet­ing near Lu­ton in 1949, and a Vin­cent Grey Flash built us­ing some of the parts from the Vin­cent he rode dur­ing his de­but road rac­ing sea­son, hav­ing started work as an ap­pren­tice at the Vin­cent fac­tory in 1950.

Then there’s a spe­cial Vin­cent Black Light­ning built us­ing a 1953 race en­gine in 1980, an MV Agusta 500cc four-cylin­der ma­chine Surtees rode dur­ing the 1960 sea­son, a Nor­ton F Type – the one he was to have rid­den in ’55 be­fore Nor­ton dis­banded their race team – and a Tri­umph Tiger 70 of the type he used to make his road rac­ing de­but in 1950.
