What’s the future?
Like the fragrant fog we all know and love, the future of two-strokes is cloudy. It’s quite feasible that we could see the Suter MMX500 on the street as a homologated road bike – Suter are working with Graz Technical University to build a direct-injection version of the bike, which will clear up the unburnt fuel problems that afflict a two-stroke’s emissions. There is some light at the end of the tunnel though – thanks to KTM’S development of their 300cc single, which uses fuel injection into the transfer ports, which is cleaner, and more accurate than carbs. But it’s unlikely we’ll ever see a wide range of road bikes again. We say: Get a classic stroker right now – they’re an endangered species, but they’re far from dead. And if you’re rich enough, buy a Suter.
