SPEEDMASTER IS BACK
Using the hugely popular Bonneville Bobber as its base, the new Speedmaster is a superb reinvention of what used to be a pretty dull bike.
The high-torque 1200cc paralleltwin T120 engine drives the party, while the addition of a new rear subframe offers a pillion option for the first time on the Bobber platform – as well as the ability to carry luggage. It gets a lovely set of American boardtracker style ‘beach bars’ to hold on to, which sweep gracefully back from the mounts, and the seat is deeper, softer, and set 15mm higher, at 705mm. Meanwhile, the footrests are forward-mounted for improved distance comfort.
The fuel tank has grown to a more useful 12 litres for greater range between fill-ups, and it gets the DRLenabled LED headlamp as standard, nestling in a cute nacelle reminiscent of the styling from the 1950 and 60s.
Also fitted is the new single-button three-touch cruise control, plus ABS and traction control. It shares the Bobber Black’s 16in front rim and 310mm twin disc front brakes with two twin-piston Brembo calipers, while the rear shock has been heavily redesigned to cope with the additional bike weight, plus luggage and a pillion, and also now has preload adjustability.
