Rest and calm are hard to find amid the hectic “tidings of comfort and joy”, to say nothing of shopping, cooking and making paper chains. If family and friends’ advice to “calm down, dear” doesn’t help, try meditation. Transcendental meditation is a simple method for reducing stress. Choose a mantra (positive word or sound), sit quietly, close your eyes and repeat the sound for 20 minutes twice daily to reach inner calm. Experts say one-to-one lessons are best but you can learn from a book or DVD. Done right, it lowers blood pressure and stress hormones.
