For a truly unforgetta­ble experience book a sunset tour of the Kangeroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs. It’s home to Chris “Brolga” Barns and his Kangaroo family, who featured in the KangarooDu­ndee TV series.

Brolga himself took us on a tour of the sanctuary where he rescues and cares for orphaned kangaroos and showed us how the babies have to be held in “pillowcase” style pouches to mimic the mother’s pouch so they feel safe and secure. Featherdal­e Wildlife Park, WWW.FEATHERDAL­E.COM.AU, , is a 40 minute train trip from Sydney and a chance to get close up with the koalas, wallabies and wombats. Make sure you stay for the dingo feeding and catch some of the talks from the enthusiast­ic park staff.

There’s plenty of organised tours to Phillip Island, near Melbourne to see the “Fairy” penguins. If you know where to find them, you can spot these tiny penguins in the beachside suburb of St Kilda, too. We headed down to the breakwater just before sunset where you can see the little penguins swim home to their nests in the rocks at sunset.
