◆ As leaves begin to turn on the trees, it’s a great time to visit an arboretum. North of Newcastle and close to the sea is Howick Hall which has 65 acres and 11,000 trees and shrubs. You can take tea in the Earl Grey Tearooms WWW.HOWICKHALLGARDENS.COM. Or in the south there is the National Arboretum Westonbirt in Gloucestershire which began in Victorian times and is known for its spectacular autumn colour, see FORESTRYGOV.UK.
