Scientists suspect exercise reduces the number of fat cells – responsible for the release of certain hormones, such as oestrogen and testosterone – which encourage tumour growth. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day; this can reduce the risk by at least 20%. Researchers, funded by Cancer Research UK, who examined the activity levels of more than 8,000 women, found the most active reduced their breast cancer risk by up to 13% compared to those who didn’t. Even gentler activities, such as housework, can make a big difference.
