● I love Countdown. I feel very privileged to have a job that I love and that I find as fascinating now as I did on the first day. I still feel a surge of adrenaline the moment the clock starts to tick down.

● Every presenter has been a worthy successor to the meister that was Richard Whiteley. From Des Lynam’s twinkly eye and Carol Vorderman’s infectious laughter to Rachel Riley’s mind-bending maths-solving and giggling and Nick’s mischief-making, they’ve been great colleagues!

● The wonderful thing about Countdown is the format. It’s irresistible – the audience are as keen to find the longest word, and to crack the number challenge, as the contestants. Even in Catsdown [8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown], the audience tr y to outscore the comedians.

● It’s hard to pick out highlights in Dictionary Corner, there have been so many. Jo Brand somehow manages to come up with a completely invented nineletter word plus a definition in 30 seconds – plus, she shares my love of sweets. Listening to Ranulph Fiennes talk of his travels to the end of the earth makes the hairs on my arms stand up, while hearing Chris Packham’s effortlessly articulate explanations of the creatures around us is a joy. In truth, though, I realise my definition of favourite is a little like Brucie’s, who used to say to everyone, ‘You’re my favourite!’

Countdown is on Channel 4 weekdays at 2.10pm.
