One of 2020’s more gratifying social media crazes has involved photogenic concoctions and unusual brewing methods, with enthusiasts taking inspiration from international coffee culture, trying new styles and posting the results. Dalgona

This frothy South Korean concoction (pictured) has become the star of countless Tiktok videos and Instagram posts during lockdown. To make it, whip instant coffee, sugar and hot water to pillowy perfection and pop on top of hot or cold milk. Want to see how it’s done? James Hoffman, former World Barista Champion and co-founder of

London’s Square Mile Coffee Roasters, has a useful video on his Instagram, @jimseven

Kopi cham

Why choose between tea and coffee when you could have both? Kopi cham, as it’s called in Malaysia — or yuanyang, as it’s known in Hong Kong — can be made by combining equal parts coffee and tea (or one-third coffee and two-thirds tea) before adding sweetened condensed milk.

Mazagran

This iced drink has its origins in Algeria, but it’s been adopted — and adapted — by the Portuguese. To make it, add lemon juice and sugar to cold brew coffee concentrate. Some recipes also add a dash of sparkling water or cold water — and, if you fancy, a little rum. Serve over ice and garnish with a slice of lemon.
