Khloé Kardashian opens up about motherhood and reaching milestones with her daughter

- GEORGIA TREVITT

She’s usually juggling mum duties with her busy work schedule, but Khloé Kardashian has been able to spend more time bonding at home with daughter True over the past few months. The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star says she feels “grateful” for being indoors with her two-year-old, as she’s reached a new milestone.

Speaking on Instagram Live, Khloé, who co-parents True with ex-boyfriend Tristan Thompson, opened up about potty training her adorable tot – and the highs and lows that have come with it.

“By no means am I a potty training expert, although I wish I was,” she said. “But recently, with everybody quarantining and staying at home, I’ve had so much more time to tackle this adventure and focus on this.”

While Khloé, 36, is used to being around children because of her nieces and nephews, she revealed she’s been learning on the job – and admitted she’s “so proud” of how far True has come.

“I did not think in a million years I’d be talking on Live about this, but when you have a baby you’ll do anything and everything,” she gushed.

Meanwhile, Tristan, 29, poured his heart out over how much

Khloé means to him in a touching Instagram post for her birthday.

“I’m wise enough now to know, you came into my life to show me just what it means to be an incredible person,” he wrote.

“I appreciate how I am able to learn from and grow because of you. I thank God for the beautiful and loving woman you are to everyone, especially our daughter True. You deserve the world Koko!”

Here, Khloé tells us about True’s potty training journey and reveals her top tips…

Hi Khloé! How have you found quarantine?

I think we all sort of feel the same way, but it’s better to be safe. And I do appreciate quarantine because I have had the opportunity to really give the potty training adventure my all. I would say everybody potty trains at their own pace. There’s no right time to start, but I’m super grateful that it was the right time for us to start because I had so much more free time.

How is it going?

We are focusing on doing the daytime routine first. We still have our night-time routine, but, of course, she’s still only two years old and she’s not able to hold her bladder through the whole night. If kids make mistakes, they’re kids. They’re going to make mistakes and it’s how, I think, the parent responds to them that matters. There’s no right, there’s no wrong. Everyone has accidents and everyone learns at their own pace. When you’re doing something that’s really fun and exciting, I don’t think the first thing on a toddler’s mind is to go to the restroom!

How often do you sit her down on the potty?

We have an hourly routine, so every hour I just put her on the potty and we make it exciting and she looks forward to it. I don’t believe in bribing – I believe in incentives and that’s my technique currently.

What are your incentives for True?

True gets rewards. She gets stickers after she’s done potty time. And also she doesn’t watch a whole movie, but we’re building up to watching little clips of [Trolls character] Princess Poppy stuff after she does a good job. But in my opinion, you have to keep it so whatever your incentive is, that has to be only for potty time. It can’t be throughout the day otherwise that’s going to confuse them. You have to give them a reason to want to go on the potty.

What have your learned so far?

When I first started, I did about 10 minutes with True sitting on the potty, but I felt like that was getting a little long for me and her because I didn’t really know the right time. For True and I now, it’s about five minutes. And I give her a book. She likes to read books so sometimes I don’t know if she’s on there longer just to read! I think every kid is different, but I think five minutes is good. I do think when I first did 10 minutes that was probably a little too long.

What have you found the hardest?

I would say the hardest part for me is you’re not a mind reader, so just to constantly be having that routine is important. It’s super easy when we’re home, but now that things are loosening up a little, we’re doing a few more things, like going to see my family. Even when she’s excited and playing with her cousins and doing all of that, you have to still be really diligent – it’s about

consistency. But I’m a very consistent type of girl! I have a ton of nieces and nephews so you’d think I would be more used to the potty training process, but it’s different when it’s your own child. I’m not that experienced, but I try.

How do you react when True has an accident?

It’s called potty training for a reason and we all make mistakes. I think their little brains are adapting so much and they’re still so excited about everything that they’re learning all throughout the day. But there’s a learning curve for both of us. And not to scold children. Use your words and reinforce how fun potty training is. When they do something well, I cheer.

That’s sweet!

It’s like I’m throwing a celebration every time that she uses the potty because it’s fun and exciting and they’re little and they feel so accomplished and it makes me so proud. I also know True’s habits now. I know when she starts either going into a corner by herself or running around – I know what her actions mean, like when she does her little potty squirm.

Why did you choose to partner with Pampers Easy Ups?

I’m sure there are so many people who are going through this, or have gone through this, or realised it seems daunting, so I was thinking, “What could I do that would make this fun and more of an incentive for True?” I was doing a lot of research and I found that Pampers Easy Ups training underwear have all different characters on. I was lucky enough that they have Princess Poppy on them, and it was just a no-brainer. Poppy is one of her favourite characters right now, with a couple of others. She feels like she’s wearing her big girl underwear!
