How do you pick up?

No. 1 Magazine - - FRONT PAGE -

Whether you are lifting a bag of shopping, picking up your child, or a box of office stationery, it’s important to do it properly otherwise you can very easily damage your back.

When you are bending down to pick something up, you must first tighten up your tummy muscles. Then, bend from the knees, not the waist. Keep the object close to your body, do not hold anything with your arms outstretched. Try and avoid lifting anything higher than shoulder height, or below your knee height as this puts pressure on your spine. When you are carrying something make sure your feet face the way you are going – avoid twisting your body in the opposite direction from your feet.
