No. 1 Magazine - - SCOTLAND'S NO.1 FOR FASHION -

Bill Murray is a legend. There is simply no other way to put it. And it’s not just his famous turns in classics like Groundhog Day, Rushmore, Charlie’s Angels, Lost in Translation and now his role in the new female-led Ghostbusters that make him such an icon, it’s his off-screen persona and the shenanigans he gets up to that have become a kind of folklore in themselves. In fact, there’s an entire online movement dedicated to stories of encounters with the 65-year-old. From crashing bachelor parties to diving behind a bar to play barman for the night and serving people tequila shots no matter what drink they asked for – tales of the most random Bill Murray encounters you could ever imagine have made him one of the most amusing and unpredictable celebrities out there. No.1’ s personal fave, when it comes to Bill Murray stories, is the one about how he crashed a party in St Andrews after a golf tournament and started washing the huge pile of dirty dishes the uni students had used. He then sat on the floor with them drinking vodka out of a mug. See, the guy is a LEGEND! Here, we give him the floor to impart his words of wisdom on us all...

I’m happy to be in another Ghostbusters film, there’s no shame to that...

We made the first one that was really great. We made a second one that was... not quite as good, but it had some good stuff in it. And it’s a wonderful bunch of people. The studio’s always wanted to make another one because... they can’t come up with any other ideas, really.

I have an aim that I’ve been working on for many years and that’s...

To be here. As impossible and improbable as it sounds, I’d like to really focus on being here and present in the moment. It’s like when you catch yourself in the mirror and you see the state you’re in – are you happy? Are you sad? Are you confident? Are you here? Really here? And most of the time you’re not. Sometimes I think of the Clint Eastwood line where he says, “You kill a man and you kill every opportunity he ever had.” It’s such a good line because we have everything we need in our bodies. You’ve just got to wish big – I’d like to see what I could do if I was really here and I wished big.

I’ve never had much luck when it comes to women...

It’s something I do think about a lot. Like, ‘What am I doing here?’ But I have great kids and I wouldn’t have had them without the women who have been in my life.

People ask why I don’t get married for the third time but there’s no need...

I don’t think I’m lonely. But it would be nice to go to some things and have a date. And someone to go and play golf in Scotland with and be able to say, “Hey isn’t this fun? We’re going round the most famous golf course in the world”.

I always joke that in my family I’m the ‘forgotten middle child’...

But when it’s a family of nine kids, there are three or four of you in the middle that are forgotten! I was, and still am, very close to my siblings. There was always financial pressure growing up, we weren’t wealthy but we weren’t poor – we lived in a nice town. When I go back now it’s like I’m still just a local guy, everyone knows you.

I’m not anti-technology but it’s common knowledge that it’s hard to get hold of me, I actually only recently got a mobile...

But I really only got it to text with my sons because they just will not answer the phone, they will only text. I don’t regret not being surrounded by technology though, I really haven’t missed out on anything. I’m not a very organised guy and I have enough to take care of without accumulating more stuff or relationships.

Bill was nominated for an Oscar for Lost in Translation starring a then unknown, Scarlett Johansson.
