Marriage is my life with’

No. 1 Magazine - - COVER STORY -

Everyone’s quite happy if you come home having done a third of a scene. I can’t stand it. As a Scottish working man, I’m like, ‘F**king get on with it.’”

It’s also because I’ve never been driven by fame... “There are actors everywhere, a lot of them in Hollywood, who instead of pursuing good acting and making good films, thrive on being in magazines and making sure they’re in the right ones and at the right parties with the right people; in fact, that seems to be what Hollywood thrives on as a whole. I’ve always detested that side of the business. I’ve worked with too many people who find the acting part of it slightly boring, but they do it because it’s the part that allows them to become famous. For me, the magazines and the photo shoots are the boring parts of my job that allow me to be on set doing my work.”

But if any of my four daughters showed an interest in acting... “I would never dream of steering them away from it, because the truth is: If you want to do this, you’re gonna do it.”

Being a good dad is something I take seriously... “You have to make time to get to know your children, spend afternoons shopping with them and just trying to build that closeness with them, instead of just being a parental figure. I’ve tried to make sure that my daughters felt that they were each very special to me, and that I’d always make time for them.”

Later this year you’ll hear me as Lumière in Beauty and The Beast... “I really wanted to do it for my 5-year-old, Anouk. It was great fun, plus I did get the opportunity to sing one of the great Disney numbers, Be Our Guest.”

My wife Eve and I have been married for over 21 years... “I appreciate that lovely feeling of being with someone for a really long time... you know each other so well and you’re so comfortable in each other’s company. I get asked what’s the secret to a happy marriage a lot, and there’s no answer to it without trivialising it. You can’t just say ‘if you do this or do that, you’ll have a great marriage’ because it doesn’t work like that. There’s no secret other than to be in love with the woman you’re sharing your life with.”
