Jennifer Hudson became a fan favourite in ITV’S The Voice as a new judge. Now
At just 35 years old, Jennifer Hudson has experienced more than most do in their entire lifetime. Whilst she’s had dazzling highs – such as winning an Oscar for her stunning performance in Dreamgirls (in which she starred alongside Beyoncé), being given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and even nabbing a role in the Sex and The City movie – all whilst releasing various chart-topping albums But she’s also suffered unimaginable loss. In 2008 Jennifer’s mother, brother and seven-year-old nephew were brutally murdered in a crime that shocked her hometown of Chicago. Her sister’s ex-husband, William Balfour was arrested and is now serving multiple life sentences for the savage slaying. It’s hard to imagine how Jennifer managed to get through the terrible tragedy of losing the family that she was so close to, but somehow she’s managed to find the joy in life again with her fiancé David and seven-year-old son, also named David. The star also went on to lose 80 pounds using Weight Watchers in a bid to live her life in a more healthy way. And meanwhile her career continues to go from strength-to-strength. Jennifer, or Jhud as she’s now more commonly known, got her big break on American Idol in 2004. Having previously experienced life as a contestant on a talent show, she’s in a unique position to give advice to the hopefuls entering this year’s The Voice. Jennifer will judge alongside old favourites Will.i.am and Tom Jones as well as fellow newcomer, Gavin Rossdale. Here, in her own words, Jennifer talks about starting out a singer, her feelings towards her body and why we shouldn’t believe those rumours of a feud between her and Beyoncé. As a kid I was always singing... “My grandma’s house had high ceilings and hardwood floors. The openness created a sound as if I was singing into a microphone. I would sit on her stairs and just sing my heart out. We have a lot of great singers in our family, so my voice wasn’t all that unusual, but some of my older family members told me I had ‘the gift.’“
As far as public singing goes, I started out by singing in my local church, but I was so nervous... “I used to beg for a solo, and then when they gave it to me, I would be too afraid to sing. I didn’t start singing with my eyes open until I was 19 years old.”
Everyone knows all about the most devastating event in my life... “There were so many shocks involved in it. Like, who do I grieve for first? Or, who do I start with? It’s bits and pieces. It’s too much. You’re confused. Your emotions are confused.”
