Nsidered ‘plus he perfect size!”

We get to know the US star a little better...

No. 1 Magazine - - COVER STORY -

But eventually I found a strength I never knew I had... “I have definitely seen the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows. You don’t know how strong you are until you are placed in that kind of moment.”

I had my son David just over a year after the tragedy... “I went from being an aunt, having a mom, and being a child, to not having a mom, becoming a mom, and raising my own child. I tell David all the time, ‘You saved my life.’”

I didn’t know I was considered ‘plus size’ until I went to LA... “I thought I was the perfect size! An interviewer asked, ‘How does it feel to be plus-sized in Hollywood?’ I looked around, like, ‘Who is she talking to? Oh, me? I’m plus-sized?’ In the neighbourhood I’m from in Chicago, a 16 is normal. But in Hollywood, everyone looks exactly the same, so I stood out.”

When I was on American Idol there were also comments made about my weight... “Early on, I remember one of the musical directors telling me that everything about me was too big; my voice, my size, and my personality. But isn’t that what being a star is? Stars are larger than life!”

Not long after that I found myself yo-yo dieting... “I would go on these detox programs – a total meat-tox, cheese-tox, and sugar-tox. But eventually, the cravings got so bad that I just couldn’t take it. I’d inevitably break down and eat a huge box of chicken wings.”

Really, the thing that changed the way I approached my body and what I put in it was David being born... “Motherhood brought tremendous responsibilities – but none greater than the obligation I felt to get healthy. David deserved to have a mama who could run after him without getting winded or getting tired, to have a role model who could teach him to make healthy food choices. I needed him to grow up with a mama who would always be there for him by caring enough about herself to take control of her health.”

After I starred in Dreamgirls with Beyoncé, there were tons of stories about us not getting along but... “There were never any rifts at all. That is still my girl to this day. I love her. We’ve always been good.”
