Interview With Rylan Clark...............................................................

Rylan Clark on his rise to television stardom, what it’s really like to work with Emma Willis, and so much more...

No. 1 Magazine - - SCOTLAND'S NO.1 -

He first shot to fame on The X Factor in 2012 and although his singing skills didn’t blow the British public away, his hilariously charming personality did. That’s why he went on to win Celebrity Big Brother the following year. Four years later and Rylan Clark’s career is going from strength to strength – with his own ‘Ryland’ showbiz segment on This Morning and his hosting gigs on Big Brother’s Bit On The Side and Babushka, it’s safe to say the television presenter is all booked up. That’s why we were delighted that Rylan found the time to chat to No.1 at This Morning Live...

Hi Rylan! How did the first ever This Morning Live weekend go? If I’m being honest, it couldn’t have went any better and I think the whole crew here would agree. We’ve had some extremely early rises and long days, but you know, that’s nothing we’re not used to so it’s been such good fun. I think the only change we would make is to make it even bigger! I hope none of the crew hate me for saying that [ laughs].

Do the early starts and long days become exhausting? It’s funny because when you first start waking up at 3am/4am, it’s a bit of a shock to the system, but you just become used to it. And even when we’re running on empty at the end of a long day, we still seem to find time to head out for a glass of bubbles.

“I’m bruised from pinching myself so often! I feel so grateful to be doing the job I’m doing now...”

What was your favourite part of doing the show live? The whole experience was great, but I think the buzz from the live audience was really fun and also getting to meet and greet the viewers. It was like a mini holiday for our team!

Let’s talk about your new game show, Babushka. What’s the game all about? I would probably compare it to Deal Or No Deal, just because it’s really simple. All you have to do is find the money and keep it right till the end. Has it been different hosting a game show compared to a show like This Morning? Yes, it’s different to anything I’ve done. I had to tackle Babushka in a different way so I didn’t really go into it as ‘the host of a game show’. I just try to act like one of the contestants in the sense that I don’t know the answers to the questions or where the money is, but I want them to win as much money as they possibly can and I just chuck to the ad breaks every now and then! You also host Big Brother’s spin off show, Bit On The Side and you’ve admittedly always been a fan of the show. Do you like to start a series and be surprised or do you do your research beforehand? Oh gosh, well let’s just be honest, I’m a fan at heart! I’m also nosy so I like to find out who’s going in, what the theme is, everything about it.

If you could give the contestants any advice before they go in, what would it be? I would probably say, just remember that the reaction from the public you receive on the way in, isn’t always the way it’s going to go for you. I walked in to boos and I won it. Hearing boos don’t mean you’re going to be the first one out.

What’s it like working with Emma Willis? I love Emma! She has helped me so much and I constantly learn from her. Emma’s just amazing.

The rise to your celebrity status has been super speedy. Do you ever have to pinch yourself? Ever? I’m bruised from pinching myself. Everything I’m doing now is honestly a dream come true. I wake up most days asking myself, ‘How the f**k did this happen?’. I’m so grateful.

When you finally get some well deserved time off, how do you spend it? Believe it or not, I can be a bit of a lad behind closed doors – I like to chill out and crack open a beer!

Would you say you’re high maintenance? Me? Never! It actually only takes me 10 minutes (most of the time) to get ready for a night out. A quick shower, blow dry my hair and then some foundation, and I am good to go.

You seem like you take care of your appearance. Do you like to invest in decent beauty products? I like to smother my face in Nivea face cream, it works but it’s really cheap so that’s a bonus. Sometimes I cover my face with so much cream that it’s completely white and then I’ll answer the door to the postman or something because I’ve forgotten I put it on! I would say moisturising and taking my make-up off are the two main things I always stick to.

With so much already going, where do you see yourself in the next few years? I hope my rise just continues because I know I’ve been really lucky. I would love to eventually have a show like Saturday Night Takeaway but with a Rylan spin to it, hopefully one day the public would love to see me hosting something like that!
