Bin bag stunt raises awareness of refugees

North Wales Weekly News - - WRITTEN BY YOU -

A GRIM row of “body bags” lined a North Wales beach recently.

But the bags were part of a graphic stunt by Amnesty supporters to raise awareness of Syrian refugees’ plight.

Some 100 campaigners, including about 40 students from Eirias High School and Rydal Penrhos School, staged the powerful demonstration near Colwyn Bay’s Victoria Pier.

Students had tweeted @EiriasAmnesty that the protest was called “Don’t let them drown”.

Sean Gavin, Eirias High School head of sixth form, said it was arranged by the schools’ Amnesty branches.

He added: “It was a really good turnout. It was a poignant demonstration designed to raise awareness about refugees.”

The students’ Amnesty campaigners also held a collection for the migrants.
