Stars dig deep for hurricane victims
Millions of dollars have been donated to the relief fund to help those affected by the disaster
Hurricane Harvey tore through Texas on 25 August, destroying thousands of homes and lives in its wake. The devastation and destruction caused by the tropical storm and subsequent flooding left thousands of people homeless, with more than 30 people losing their lives to the storm. So moved by the disaster were a number of US celebrities that they stepped up to the plate to help out. Actor Kevin Hart kick-started the celebrity donations, encouraging his mates to match the $25,000 he pledged for the cause. ‘We’ve participated in a lot of challenges on the internet, some meaningful, some meaningless, but we’ve all done them,’ Kevin’s rallying cry went. ‘I’m going to start a REAL challenge. I’m challenging a lot of my celebrity friends to follow my lead and donate $25,000 to Hurricane Harvey to the Red Cross.’
Nicki Minaj, DJ Khaled, The Rock, Jennifer Lopez and her boyfriend Alex Rodriguez all answered his call and donated $25,000 each to the fund – with Kevin doubling his donation to $50,000. After just one day, the fund had raised over $1,000,000.
The Kardashians also stepped up and donated half a million dollars to the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. ‘We have been watching the heartbreaking footage of the catastrophic flooding in Houston and our hearts go out to the people of Texas,’ wrote Kris on her Instagram.
Beyoncé posted: ‘Texas you are in my prayers,’ and is rumoured to have donated millions of dollars for the relief effort in her hometown, and Drake revealed he was working with local aid groups. Miley Cyrus donated $500,000, having burst into tears on the Ellen Degeneres show talking about the disaster. Ellen herself pledged $1m, a sum matched by both Leonardo Dicaprio and Sandra Bullock. Cher also donated to help local animal rescue shelters in the aftermath.
