Students set goals with an Olympic star
TWO Year 10 students from The Avon Valley School met double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes at a celebration event.
Charlotte Oliver and Paulina Jaworska took part in the AQA Unlocking Potential programme, which is run jointly by exam board AQA and the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust to raise students’ aspirations for future life goals.
The students are nominated by teachers who believe they would benefit from mentoring by an athlete, who helps to increase confidence, self-belief and motivation.
Charlotte and Paulina participated in the eight month programme, dur- ing which they were mentored by Warwickshire’s Paralympic skier Anna Turney. The pair regularly met with Anna who guided and helped them to organise a community project which benefitted others.
Charlotte’s project took her to Age UK’s Bloomin Group – a social group based at The Claremont Centre which supports ladies aged 70 to 100 years old – to spend time with the ladies and help them to make cards.
Paulina’s community project was centred on supporting young people with serious illnesses and their families. Paulina teamed up with Molly Olly’s Wishes charity and planted a Butterfly Wishing Tree at Zoe’s Place Hospice in Coventry, where children can write their wishes on butterflies which are then placed on the tree.
The programme culminated in a celebration graduation event hosted at Millbank Tower overlooking Westminster.
As well as meeting Dame Kelly Holmes during the event, Charlotte and Paulina met a number of other athletes. They said: “Working with Anna has been amazing, she has supported us both so much.
“The event in London was awesome and it was exciting to hear and meet Dame Kelly Holmes.”
