Coventry City legend’s plea to Sisu: ‘Let the club go!’
FORMER MIDFIELDER, 80, JOINS CALLS FOR A NEW OWNER
COVENTRY City legend Ronnie Farmer has this message for Sisu – “let the club go!”
The former City midfielder, once voted Sky Blues’ greatest ever player by Telegraph readers, echoes the call of more than 17,600 signatories to the paper’s petition calling on Sisu to sell up and go.
The 80-year-old, who played for the side in all four divisions in the 1950s and 1960s, told how he despairs at the club’s fortunes and wants to see a new owner at the helm.
Coventry finally managed to claim their first league win this season with a 2-0 victory over Port Vale, yesterday.
“I just despair, I really despair,” said Ronnie. “I just can’t believe what’s going on.
“The manager leaves and we win. How ridiculous is that?”
He added: “We were going to get relegated if you sell your best players, you’re weakening your side.
“I’d like somebody to come along with money.”
Asked what his message to Sisu would be, he said: “Let the club go!”
He added: “They’re not dishing out money to buy players.”
The Telegraph started the petition after demanding that Coventry City owners Sisu put the club up for sale after a disastrous nine years.
High profile figures supporting the petition in its first 24 hours included Henry Winter, chief football writer at the Times, and former England, Villa and Liverpool striker Stan Collymore.
More big names to back our campaign are 1987 FA Cup hero David Phillips, Coventry-born football pundit Richard Keys, former manager and player Bobby Gould, Micky Quinn and former Sky Blues fullback Stuart Pearce.
The petition says: “We believe that the owners of Coventry City have failed the fans during their time in charge of the club. Attendances, revenues and league positions have all declined during Sisu’s tenure.
“After nine years of failure, it is time for the owners to put the club up for sale so someone can provide the investment and know how needed to take this once-proud club out of decline and put it back on the right course again.”
