RACER ON THE ROAD

Octane - - LETTERS -

ROBERT COUCHER’S ‘Jaguar Milestones’ piece on the Le Mans XK140 in Octane 151 interested me because I rode in that car as a boy. It was the Tuesday after the race – which was run in late July in 1956, otherwise I would have been away at school. Robbie Walshaw’s son, Paul, had been my best friend at primary school, so Robbie knew me well and when he spotted me standing at a bus stop he offered me a li* into town. The car was still wearing its race numbers so, as a 15-year-old racing enthusiast, I jumped at the chance.

I don’t recall Robbie telling me about what had happened at La Sarthe but I did learn later that in addition to an apology the ACO offered him a free entry for life! PAUL HARGREAVES NORTH YORKSHIRE
