College ahead of the game in futsal craze
FOOTBALLERS will soon be able to practice their fancy footwork at a new indoor arena.
Oldham is set to be home to the north west’s hub for growing footballing craze futsal.
The FIFA-approved version of five-a-side was developed in Brazil and Uruguay and is played on a smaller pitch with a smaller ball.
Oldham College has now teamed up with the @Futsal Group to create a new facility at the Rochdale Road campus.
Three futsal pitches, which are marked by lines rather than walls and boards, and a full FIFA regulation sized pitch are planned for the campus and will also be open to the community.
The special sport flooring will also be suitable for basketball, roller derby and many other sports.
The development forms part of the multi-million pound expansion of the college which includes the refurbishment of existing sporting facilities.
Oldham College principal Alun Francis said: “The futsal centre of excellence for the north west brings an excellent new facility to the college and community.”
The futsal facilities are expected to be finished by November, with plans for new outdoor multi-sports pitches also in the pipeline.
