World championship joy for bodybuilder Matt
AN amateur bodybuilder has been ranked among the top 10 in the world – at just his second ever show.
The Advertiser reported how Matt Bowd, from Chadderton, was named British champion after the NAC-UK Opens last month.
He went on to represent GB at the world championships in Hamburg and came away a respectable seventh in the Mr Athletic category.
The 28-year-old, who works as a personal trainer at Absolution Gym, in Stockfield Mill, Chadder- ton, and runs his own fitness company Elite Military Fitness, said: “I’m over the moon. To be considered one of the top ten in the world for my class is unbelievable. Everyone is really proud of me.
“Just to compete is an achievement on its own but to rank so highly at my second ever show is crazy.”
The father of six took to the stage in Germany with 50 other competitors from across the globe who were all trying to impress judges.
Matt added: “I was a lot more relaxed this time but the atmosphere was huge.
“I was called up for comparisons three times which was a little nerve- wracking. I just feel so proud to be among the world’s best in what I do.
“It’s such a big professional show and there were lots of TV crews and people stopping me to take my picture – I felt like a celebrity.”
And Matt should get used to being in the limelight as he makes appearances on Coronation Street as new gym instructor, Goliath.
Matt has filmed around 15 episodes which will air over the coming weeks.
Now back in the UK Matt will continue training and hopes to defend his British title next year.
He added: “The support I’ve had has been amazing. Especially from every- one at Absolution and our sister gym Fit Bodz.
“People have been coming up to the gym to see me and many have said it’s great to see Chadderton on the map. It’s really given the community a sense of pride.”
