We’re counting down the days with giant calendar
VILLAGERS are lighting up the dark winter nights as they count down to Christmas – with a lifesize advent calendar.
Householders in Uppermill have once again decided to decorate their windows in the run up to the festive season.
Each night a new window, or two, is lit up across the village.
Erica Ryan, who organised the calendar, said: “It was such fun last year and people seemed to like it.
“We enjoyed it so much we didn’t consider not doing it again this year.”
The windows have all been created to follow the theme of music and 31 houses have signed up to take part.
There will also be windows at Uppermill Methodist Church and the gift shop Authentic on Mill Street.
The windows are all lit between 4pm and 9pm with a new location revealed each evening.
Erica added: “We’ve had lots of amazing windows so far and have more to come.
“We’ve had lots of traditional carols but also popular songs like Frosty the Snowman and even some Frozen-themed ones.
“It was just a bit of fun to start with and I never really thought it would be so popular. Last Christmas Eve we had a walk around to see them all once they were lit and we had more than 50 people come along to see all the different windows. The kids in the village really love it and a lot of them are proud of the windows in their own homes. We’ve even got a bit of a following on Facebook and have had a lot of hits on the blog.”
Erica came up with the idea after visiting a similar life-size advent calendar in Saltaire, Yorkshire.
Erica said: “It’s something that people see, get excited about and think, yes, I’d like to do that.”
