Sleek new look for dad who shed the pounds

Oldham Advertiser - - #OLDHAMLIVE -

AN overweight dad who wanted to set a healthier example to his children has won a national weight-loss award.

David Eyres has been named Slimming World’s Mr Sleek after a drastic change in his lifestyle.

The 34-year-old weighed in at 17 stone 12lbs when he first joined the slimming group in Waterhead.

He was prompted to sign up with his wife Kelly after seeing an unflattering picture of himself over Christmas.

A year on he is a shadow of his former self – dropping four-and-ahalf stone and eight inches off his waist.

The self-employed gardener said: “I was worried I was setting a bad example to the kids.

“I tried to put it to the back of my mind but when I saw the photo of me and my eldest son Ben, I knew I needed to do something.

“I was the heaviest I’d ever been and my confidence level was pretty much zero. That photograph was a real wake-up call.

“I was worried about being the only man at Slimming World and thought I’d stick out like a sore thumb, so I was really glad I had Kelly with me on that first night.

“The consultant Michaela was so welcoming though and within a couple of weeks my nerves had disappeared.

“I started to look forward to going each week, of course because I wanted to know how much weight I’d lost but I wanted to see how everyone else had got on too.”

David managed to hit his first weight-loss target within five months and went on to reach a healthy 12st 5lbs for his six-foot tall frame.

He added: “I couldn’t believe the change in me in just a few months.

“I’m quite competitive and I loved collecting the awards that you get for every 7lbs you lose.

“They made me want to keep going for the next milestone and I’ve got all the certificates stuck to our fridge.

“I look like a different bloke – and feel like one too.”
