POLICE are investigating after a man threatened to ‘burn down’ an Oldham Athletic sponsor’s building if the club signed convicted rapist Ched Evans.

The anonymous call was made to the sponsor in the days before Latics pulled out of the controversial deal.

A GMP spokesman confirmed that the sponsor received a threat on the phone on January 5. The male caller said the firm’s building in Oldham would be ‘burned to the ground’ if Evans signed for the football club.

At the time Oldham Athletic were in on/off talks as to whether to employ Evans

He was released from prison last October halfway through a five-year sentence for raping a woman.

Evans has continued to maintain his innocence over the rape.
