Prize shortlist accolade for Jessica
AN EDGE Hill midwifery student was one of just four finalists for the Student Midwife of the Year 2017 award from the Royal College of Midwives.
Jessica Thomas, a third year student and president of the Midwifery Society at Edge Hill said: “It was an amazing surprise to be recognised in this way. I love what I do and am passionate about it, but never considered that I would be shortlisted for something like this.”
Ambitious Jessica is currently attending job interviews, ready to embark on her career as a midwife after she graduates in July, and also hopes to qualify to carry out “Examination of the Newborn” checks and later complete a Masters.
She is also working on a series of video lectures tackling various mental health-related topics such as puerperal psychosis, depression and anxiety.
“I know how busy a student midwife’s schedule can be, so producing these videos means they can get information about these important topics at a time convenient to them,” Jessica said.
As a student quality ambassador for the NW, Jessica hopes the videos will eventually be available to students across the region, after initially being trialled at Edge Hill.
