Skem look to make recovery

- BY EMMA SANDERS

SKELMERSDALE CC suffered a heavy defeat to Burscough on Saturday as they were beaten by 84 runs and five wickets.

Martyn Brierley and his team were always going to be up against a strong Burscough side so they hoped to be able to bowl them out for a low score in the first innings.

However, after winning the toss and electing to field, Burscough went on to notch up a comfortable total of 246-5.

Skelmersdale had a big score to chase but they got off to a very good start with Ben Maddocks picking up 33 runs as opening batsman.

He wasn’t supported by the top or middle order though and Skelmersdale suffered a batting collapse which inevitably gave Burscough the victory.

There were late surges from number eight batsmen Barry Leadbetter, who produced an impressive tally of 34 runs and Matthew Fenney, who came in at number 10 to also hit 34.

Those high scores were too late though and Skelmersdale had their backs against the wall as Burscough went on to secure a comfortable win.

Brierley will be hoping his team can pick themselves up and bounce back against opponents Firswood Park and Spring View this weekend in a double header.

Skelmersdale take on Firswood on Saturday in the league and they will look to take advantage of an inconsistent side.

Sunday’s opponents Spring View have picked up three victories in their last five games and will be a tough match for Skelmersdale.
