Not good enough, says boss Gillespie

- BY EMMA SANDERS

SKELMERSDALE United lost their fourth game in a row on Tuesday evening as they were defeated 4-1 by Clitheroe.

It followed a hugely disappointing 2-0 defeat against Hyde United and means Skelmersdale’s struggles at the start of this season continue.

Player-coach Steven Gillespie was frustrated at his side’s inability to maintain a clean sheet and admitted it was a game Skem should have won.

“It wasn’t good enough. It was evident that the performance wasn’t at the standard required to get anything from the game,” said Gillespie.

“The frustrating thing is we had a little go at them at half-time and the players gave us a slight reaction but then the game went away from us again.

“It was poor and it doesn’t leave us much to work with. We have a game on Saturday now so we can pick ourselves up and go again.”

Skelmersdale’s Evo Stik North game at Radcliffe Borough has been brought forward to this Saturday and Gillespie was pleased with the decision to change the fixture date as he thinks his players will be keen to get over another poor result.

He hopes United can prevent conceding early goals but Gillespie will have to wait a little while longer to return to the pitch himself as he continues to recover from injury.

“It’s a good thing [the game has been moved forward] because you want games to come thick and fast,” said Gillespie.

“It’s hurting us at the moment so you want to forget about it and get over it. We need to get some points on the board.

“We have taken the lead a couple of times and that first goal is crucial in a game.

“We got that on Tuesday but went 2-1 down so quickly which is frustrating.

“It’s something we need to address and definitely something we need to work on. The team we had were good enough to win on the day.

“I’ve tried to push myself to be fit as soon as possible but I will be ready when I’m ready. As soon as I’m fit and able I’ll be the first one out there!”
