MP backs reprieve for flood pumps

Ormskirk Advertiser - - Student Life -

ROSIE COOPER MP has welcomed the decision by the Environment Agency (EA) to continue to operate the West Lancashire Flood Pumps for an interim period.

The news comes after a lengthy campaign by the West Lancashire MP to ensure that the Alt Crossens flood pumps, which had previously been under notice for closure this summer were not simply closed and West Lancashire homes, farms and businesses left to flood.

Ms Cooper said: “I welcome this news as it gives us some certainty, if only in the short term, that these pumps will not just be switched off and residents in West Lancashire just left to flood in severe weather conditions.

“However, we must be mindful that this is just a short-term measure while the Government sorts out its legislation on who is responsible for what and how the flood pumps will operate in the future.

“I have previously campaigned hard for the setting up of an Internal Drainage Board (IDB) as EA are keen to offload the responsibility of future management of the flood and drainage pumps in the Alt Crossens area.

“At this point, though, government legislation is blocking progress. Once the Government sorts itself out, the responsibility will lie with local agencies, including the EA, Lancashire County Council and West Lancashire Borough Council to pull together and find a solution, as doing nothing is not an option.

“We must protect people’s homes and businesses. This is land that also generates £230m of income and provides 2,500 jobs.

“This is a vital sector of our local economy.

“I will continue to work to ensure there is progress made in Parliament to allow for West Lancashire to protect itself from further flooding.”
