Pensioner in hospital after hitting light

AN ELDERLY man suffered a major trauma injury after crashing into a traffic light in Burscough.

The man, believed to be in his 90s, was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital after being cut from his car.

His condition is unknown but, North West Ambulance Service said that he was conscious and breathing when he was admitted.

The collision happened shortly before midday on Wednesday, February 8 on the A59 Liverpool Road, at the junction with Junction Lane and Trevor Road.

Firefighte­rs had to cut the man free from his car before he was taken from the scene in an ambulance.

Police remained on the scene until around 1pm. when traffic was again running smoothly.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Two fire engines from Ormskirk were called to a road traffic collision involving a car on Liverpool Road North, Burscough, at 11.58.

‘‘Firefighte­rs released one person from the vehicle and made the scene safe.

‘‘The casualty was later taken to hospital by paramedics.”
